Back in 2014 , Azealia Banks surprised us all when she unexpectedly dropped her debut album Broke With Expensive Taste, which had been delayed numerous times, but it was definitely worth the wait. If you’re familiar with Azealia’s musical style, you’ll know that she’s nothing like the other rappers that are currently out right now and this no doubt works in her favor. Azealia mixes dance and electronic tracks with her trademark singing and rapping style to deliver a sonically pleasing treat, while still offering tracks with classic hip-hop feels.
Often known for her quick, tongue-twisting rap style, Azealia puts all of her talents on full display with Broke With Expensive Taste. From the hypnotizing opening track “Idle Delilah” to the album’s upbeat closing track “Miss Camaraderie”, Azealia displays her versatility and ability to make any genre of music work to her advantage.
If there’s one track where Azealia showed just how musically versatile she is, it’s “Nude Beach a Go-Go”. This funky surf rock track sees AB collaborating with Ariel Pink for an upbeat, fun in the sun vibe, adding an unexpected, yet welcome element to Broke With Expensive Taste. Fan favorites like “BBD”, “Yung Rapunxel”, and “Chasing Time” obviously made the cut, and of course one of Azealia’s most popular tracks to date, “212”, was featured, but that isn’t BWET‘s high point. “Wallace” and “Soda” were among the tracks that I couldn’t take off of repeat and that I couldn’t resist going back to when finishing the album in full. Maybe it’s because of the impressive lyrical content, clever metaphors, or because of the addictive instrumentals of both tracks, but what’s for certain is that Azealia is one of the greatest creatives the industry has seen.
Favorite Tracks: “Wallace”, “Soda”, “Chasing Time”, “Miss Amor”, and “Yung Rapunxel”.
Verdict: 9.4 out of 10 – Regardless of how you feel about Azealia personally, it’s impossible to deny her talent and musical prowess. Broke With Expensive Taste was a great debut for the long-weaved vixen and this album single handedly silenced uncultured critics that labeled her as a “one hit wonder”. Not needing an abundance of features to carry the project, the lavish Liquorice Vixen shows that she has no problem standing on her own and excelling while doing so. If you’re a lover of rap, dance, electronic music, smooth vocals, or music in general, Broke With Expensive Taste is an album that you don’t want to pass up.
Purchase and stream Broke With Expensive Taste and be on the lookout for Azealia’s highly anticipated upcoming project Fantasea II: The Second Wave.
