All too often, we see or hear about friends, family members, and acquaintances who stay in toxic or otherwise unfulfilling relationships because they’ve “invested too much time” with their significant other to be by themselves, or to just start over with someone else. While there are people who agree with that questionable attempt at a justification for remaining in an unhealthy relationship, I personally don’t agree with that mindset in any capacity.

There could be various things that begin to chisel away at the once happy and fulfilling foundation of romantic relationships such as infidelity, communication issues, lack of passion, decrease of trust, and outside influences. Regardless of the reason(s), it doesn’t make much sense to stick around simply because you feel as though you’ve put in too much time. While relationships can be seen as investments to some degree, it doesn’t make sense to keep devoting time and energy into something that yields no feasible return on investment for you.

Simply “dealing” with unhealthy issues, such as abuse (whether verbal, physical, or emotional) or disrespectful behavior such as infidelity,  just because you’ve been with someone for a long period of time, or you’ve been through a lot together, is a nonsensical way to live your life.

Essentially, when I hear someone use that excuse, I immediately think that the person in question is simply settling for less due to the “horror” of being alone, starting fresh with someone else, or the fear of going back into what they see as the Realm of Uncertainty, otherwise known as the dating world.

Continuing to be present in a toxic or otherwise unfulfilling relationship only wastes your own time and drains you of the chances of true happiness.

At the end of the day, everyone has the right to do whatever they want in their personal life, but if you truly want happiness, you have to do what’s best for you and take necessary risks to regain your happiness. All relationships go through stages where things may not be the greatest, but dealing with a continuous pattern of toxicity and unhealthy behavior isn’t something that you should put up with. You have to put your own happiness and peace of mind before anything else and be with someone who loves you enough to show you the love, respect, and dedication that you deserve.
